Devotion: Seventh Sunday after Trinity

Invocation

In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Collect of the Day

O God, whose never-failing providence orders all things both in heaven and earth, we humbly implore You to put away from us all hurtful things and to give us those things that are profitable for us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.  [H67]

Holy Scripture (Saint Mark 8:1-9 NKJV)

In those days, the multitude being very great and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and said to them, ÒI have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat.  And if I send them away hungry to their own houses, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from afar.Ó  Then His disciples answered Him, ÒHow can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness?Ó  He asked them, ÒHow many loaves do you have?Ó  And they said, ÒSeven.Ó  So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.  And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the multitude.  They also had a few small fish; and having blessed them, He said to set them also before them.  So they ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets of leftover fragments.  Now those who had eaten were about four thousand.

This is the Word of the Lord!

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

     Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord;

     who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

     born of the Virgin Mary;

     suffered under Pontius Pilate,

     was crucified, died, and was buried;

     He descended into hell;

     the third day He rose again from the dead;

     He ascended into heaven

     and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

     from thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

     the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints;

     the forgiveness of sins;

     the resurrection of the body;

     and the + life everlasting.  Amen.

Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

     hallowed be Thy name,

     Thy kingdom come,

     Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

     Give us this day our daily bread;

     and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

     and lead us not into temptation,

     but deliver us from evil.

     For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.

Prayers for Others and Ourselves

Prayers for Others and Ourselves (Sunday)

Please use one or more of the following petitions from each section:

For the Joy of the Resurrection

For Easter:

Almighty and most merciful God, pour out on us Your abundant blessing that all who in true faith joyfully celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead may be filled with Your heavenly benediction.  Once we were in darkness, but now we are in the Light, even Jesus Christ, our Lord. [253]

For Our Baptism into Christ's Death and Resurrection:

Almighty God, grant that we, who have been redeemed from the old life of sin through our Baptism into the death and resurrection of Your Son Jesus Christ, may be renewed in Your Holy Spirit and live in righteousness and true holiness; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. [353]

For True and Godly Worship

For the Right Worship of God:

Heavenly Father, God of all grace, waken our hearts that we may never forget Your blessings, but steadfastly thank and praise You for all Your goodness, that we may live in Your fear until, with all Your saints, we praise You eternally in Your heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. [110]

Before Worship:

O Lord, our Creator, Redeemer, and Comforter, as we come together to worship You in spirit and in truth, we humbly pray that You may open our hearts to the preaching of Your Word, so that we may repent of our sins, believe in Jesus Christ as our only Savior, and grow in grace and holiness.  Hear us for His sake. [130]

After Worship:

Almighty and merciful God, we have again worshipped in Your presence and have received forgiveness for our many sins and the assurance of Your love in Jesus Christ.  We thank You for this undeserved grace and ask You to keep us in faith until we inherit eternal salvation; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. [131]

Before Reception of Holy Communion:

Dear Savior, we come to Your table at your gracious invitation to eat and drink Your holy Body and Blood.  Let us find favor in Your eyes to receive this holy Sacrament in faith for the salvation of our souls and to the glory of Your holy name; in Your holy name we pray. [132]

After Reception of Holy Communion:

Dear Lord Jesus, we thank and praise You that You have again refreshed us with the gift of Your holy Body and Blood in this comforting Sacrament.  Bless our participation that we may depart from Your presence with peace and joy in the knowledge that we are reconciled to God.  We ask this in Your name. [133]

For the Faithful Preaching and Hearing of God's Word

For the Holy Ministry:

Almighty and everlasting God, whose infinite power alone does great wonders, send down on Your ministers and on the congregations committed to their care the healthful spirit of Your grace, and that they may truly please You, pour on them the continual dew of Your blessing; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. [109]

For Success of the Word:

Lord Jesus Christ, Giver and Perfecter of our faith, we thank and praise You for continuing among us the preaching of Your Gospel for our instruction and edification.  Send Your blessing upon the Word which has been spoken to us, and by Your Holy Spirit increase our saving knowledge of You, that day by day we may be strengthened in the divine truth and remain immovable in Your grace.  Give us strength to fight the good fight and by faith to overcome all the temptations of Satan, the flesh, and the world, that we may finally receive the salvation of our souls; in Your holy name we pray. [240]

For Success of the Word and Sacraments:

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we thank You for having permitted us to come into Your presence in this service of worship to hear Your Word, to sing Your praises, to enjoy the fellowship of the communion of saints, and to be built up in our most holy faith.  Accompany the truth we have heard with the presence of Your Holy Spirit that, as good seed in good ground, it may take root, grow up, and in due season bring forth fruit to the honor of Your holy name.  Continue to bless us as we use Your Word and sacraments, and grant that all who are gathered here in Your house may be numbered with the saints in glory everlasting to give eternal praise to You, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. [241]
